A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings

A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings is a story of magical realism, a story where although there is magic or imaginary things in the story, those imaginary things illuminate realistic attributes that happen in our lives. This story is about a couple who encounters a old man with enormous wings in their backyard faced down in the mud. The couple was dealing with a very sick baby. When they encountered this "creature" they were surprised and didn't know what it was. The old man was dirty and ragged. They believed he could've been an angel but they weren't sure. Throughout the story they treated him like a pest, at first the couple put the old man in the sea for three days but he ended up being back at their house. then the couple put him in a chicken coop and didn't let him out. The couple didn't feed him or tend to him and looked at him as a burden. They counseled a priest and he said this must be an angel because he has wings. The priest told the couple if he speaks back to me in Latin then he sure is an angel because "that's Gods' language" , however the "angel did not speak back to him in Latin, he did communicate but in a dialect unknown. When the man didn't speak back to the priest in Latin, he went on to accuse the creature of coming from the devil. They counseled the neighbor that tried to feed him mothballs but the angel refused because he knew that would've poisoned him. Then the wife decided it was a grand idea to start charging people to come see the "angel" in a chicken cage. Townspeople would talk about him, poke at him, and even burned him. No one treated this creature with kindness or even tried to see if they would communicate with him in a caring, empathetic way. At the end of the story the creature flew away and the couple could care less about him being there even though the story felt like a year or two went by. This story showed me that you should always treat someone with kindness even if they dont look how you expect them to look. I believe we should educate our children and others to be empathetic and mindful of how we speak to others and do random acts of kindness. 💓

  1. You summarized the story well. I like the colors that you used the green against the orange. It made your work pop, kind of like an attention grabber.

  2. I agreed to teach our children good manners , and right conduct . Our home is the first place to learn.
